Republican Flip Flops What was a great victory for the online poker industry yesterday, became a telling defeat for the industry today. Poker players across the country rallied their troops and called to arms several loud voices that spoke for the hundreds of thousands of online poker players on the Republican Party platform website.
Poker advocates berated language in the Republican platform that called for a strong prohibition of Internet gambling. And yesterday, that language was removed from the platform and the industry fell at ease once again with the Republican Party.
Today, the language was put back into the platform and the party that was once known for standing for small government, that protected an individual's rights, officially stated their case that they no longer stand for these ideals.
The pressure came from the religious conservatives of the Republican party. The second the language was removed and citizens rejoiced, the religious conservatives contacted their inside connections and demanded the language be reinstated. With no hesitation the language was written back into the platform.
Stated clearly in the platform language is a statement about gambling that is not even true, that has no basis in fact, that is strictly the same hyperbole that has caused thousands of poker playing Americans to abandon the Republican party.
"Millions of Americans suffer from problem or pathological gambling that can destroy families," it now reads in the platform. "We support legislation prohibiting gambling over the Internet..."
The words send fear to the hearts of Americans who believed the Republican party stood for small government.
"They fight for the rights of middle-aged men to carry guns, and they claim no harm can come from them; but Internet gambling they have a problem with," said one irate American after the language was reinstated.
"How can they say they are the party that respects freedom, when they take away freedom of choice from women, from gays, and now from poker players," said another irate, and now former, Republican.
