The first legal poker room license for London has been issued, and other licenses are expected to be awarded soon. In celebration of the English love of the sport, the Poker in the Park festival will take place this Friday and Saturday, August 15th and 16th.

The event will be hosted in Leicester Square, and is expected to draw over 25,000 poker enthusiasts. Features will include appearances and lectures by some of the stars of the poker world, exhibitions by land-based and online poker rooms, free hourly tournaments, and Las Vegas-style showgirls.

London has established itself alongside such European hotbeds of poker as Amsterdam, Vienna, and Barcelona through its hosting of the World Series of Poker Europe and the grassroots appeal of the game around town. Television ratings for poker shows in Britain continue to impress, and instructional classes run out of room.
