USA Online Poker Information
US poker players are accepted at only a few secure and trusted sites on the web. Players can play for free at many of those sites, but they also can play using real money. Current US online poker laws are ambiguous and no one really knows what will become of the online poker industry.
Laws are constantly being proposed on a federal level, as well as on a state level, that would either study the effects of poker on society, or that would completely legalize the industry.
The latest federal Bill proposed, Bill HR 6663, would define illegal Internet gambling as only related to sports betting. Bill HR 6663 would also allow companies who left the US market post-UIGEA to return to the market without further investigation. The new Bill has not been endorsed by the Poker Players Alliance, but it does have the support of this website, as well as many others whose only wish is to see greater diversity return to the US online poker market.
Payments are an issue to most people, but moreso to USA citizens. Although, the sites that do accept players from the US have developed technically advanced methods that expedite the process of depositing and withdrawing money. Currently, it is considered safe and legal to play at US poker sites for real money.
US Poker at Real Casinos
While the poker industry attempts to differentiate itself from typical casino games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, it is still considered to be a game mainly influenced by chance. However, the growth of professional poker players who consistently beat amateurs to final tables at major Texas Hold'em events is slowly proving to the world the level of skill that the game truly involves.
The biggest tournament in the poker industry occurs inside the Rio Casino on the Las Vegas strip. It is, of course, the World Series of Poker, and it features the biggest prize pools each year. Although amateur poker players can enter for a chance to beat pros for big money, the tournament is mostly dominated by professional players.
Probably more popular than the big WSOP tournament are the daily and nightly games held at local bars, restaurants, and casinos. The bigger casinos feature bad beat jackpots that sometimes pay off tens of thousands of dollars. Texas Hold'em tournaments run throughout the days, past the night, and into the early morning hours.
Big events also allow advertising opportunities for brands such as Milwaukee Light Beer, and other pop culture companies to reach a younger, hipper, smarter, college-type crowd, which they would otherwise not be able to pentetrate.
While the UIGEA attempted to stop the proliferation of poker throughout the country, it ultimately only served as a minor road bump, and the poker industry remains in the pulse of American pop culture today.
Tips For Playing Responsibly
As much as we promote the game of poker and the legalization of the industry, we feel just as strongly about promoting to players tips for playing the game responsibly. It is our belief that along with US legalization and regulation will come much stronger promotion of responsible gaming, which is one of the main reasons we believe the online poker industry should be regulated.
Of the many important tips we can give for playing poker online, the most important may be to know your limits. What this means is that a player should go into a game/night/tournament/casino with a set amount of money he or she wishes to spend for entertainment purposes. Once that limit is hit it is vital to stop playing at that point. Once a player goes back into his or her pocket for cash that was not intended to be spent the player is entering problem gambling territory. Feelings of guilt and shame will surely follow this type of negative action.
Of the many important tips we can give it also very important for us to point out that if a problem is perceived by a plyaer, that player must seek help immediately. There are numerous sources where a player who believes they have developed a problem can get help. Gamblers Anonymous has bases all across the United States, as well as many internatonal offices. On a local level there are typically many resources available as well.
The game of poker, both online and at casinos, should always be played for fun. Even professionals who play the game for a living have limits that they must not surpass. Like any other game or online activity poker can become harmful if abused.
We advise all players to never let the game get to them.
